Nothing signals the start of summer quite like a delicious, refreshing strawberry shortcake. I recently found this excellent recipe from Canadian Living for a classic version that is simple, light, and delicious. Give it a try — it will make you think it’s summer, even if the weather disagrees.

Recently, after much coveting of other people’s gorgeous quilts on Pinterest, Sherry from Young House Love’s story of taking on her first quilt, and discovering the world’s coolest sewing circle, The Modern Quilt Guild, I decided to jump into quilting with both feet! Luckily, I had a brand new nephew who could be my quilting guinea pig… Something he did happily, as you can see from the photos.

Sometimes, you read a recipe or look at a photograph and think “that seems simple enough.” Then you get halfway through making it and find youself holding a runny springform pan full of liquid cheesecake in the car as your husband drives at walking speed all the way to your mother’s house. I feel that over the past year or two, I’ve made a huge amount of progress as a baker and home chef. More than ever, I have been trying to find ways to take my skills to the next level, perfecting some of the old French cooking techniques that are supposed to be the basis of a good culinary education.
In keeping with that resolution, I decided to try my hand at baking baguettes at home this past weekend. While they turned out quite well (in my humble opinion), I can definitely tell this is something I will have to practice until I get it right! Give it a try. I’d love to hear how your bread-baking goes.

When I was little, one of my favourite belongings was a fabric book made for me by my Granny Annie. The book’s pages were made entirely of fabric with appliques of various different things: a page featured a hen that zipped open to reveal two chicks, a Christmas tree with ornaments that attach with snaps, and a shoe with real laces to tie.
When I became an aunt in the summer of 2009, I dug out my special fabric book from way back in the late 1980s and began brainstorming how I could re-create this for my nephew. After two years of idea generation, fabric selection, designing, cutting, and of course, sewing, Spencer’s special book (as he calls it) was complete!

If I was on death row and could request any meal in the world for my last meal on earth, you can guess what it would be… My Mom’s tuna casserole. This is my absolute favourite thing to eat, and one of my favourite things to make. It’s easy, hearty, delicious, and makes a batch big enough to ensure loads of leftovers. (Not that I’d need the leftovers if it was my last meal!)
